“You’re gonna regret you ever messed with me!”

I am inside the dressmaker’s dummy, hoping I’m invisible. I’ve never heard anybody so angry. Mama and Daddy don’t yell like this. Nobody in Levy yells like this. I hear Ash’s voice, “Leave him alone!”

There’s a scuffle and wail. I don’t know what’s happening.

“I saw what you d-did!”

“Well, just wait till you see what I do to you! I shoulda left you where I found you, begging for food! I shoulda pushed you right off that train, you little ingrate!”

“Stop it!” Mama screams.

“Get outta my way!”

“Leave him alone!”

“Get off me, you—”

Then I hear a clunk, a loud thump. There’s quiet and I can actually hear the blood pumping between my ears. Somebody’s hurt! I want to peek, I want to run, but I can’t move! It’s dark. Too dark!

I hear a dragging sound. I hear breathing and grunts. A whisper, “Get out! Go on!”

Next thing I know it’s hot. There is fire all around me. I try to run, but I fall, and my head hurts. This is all a bad dream. It’ll be over soon. All be over soon . . .
