Mike felt his cheek to make sure he wasn’t bleeding. It didn’t seem like he was badly hurt. But his face was flushed with embarrassment.

“I’m okay,” Mike assured his friends. “Seriously.”

Nora rushed over from the four-square line. “I can take you to the nurse,” she volunteered.

That was the last thing Mike wanted! “It’s okay—I can go on my own,” he said.

It was one thing to have people pay attention when he was doing something cool, like making a cup float in midair. But Mike wasn’t doing a show right now! He practically ran off the playground.

Inside Mrs. Rivard’s office, another kid was throwing up into a trash can. Suddenly Mike felt like he had to throw up too. And that wasn’t even the worst thing. After the kid washed up and came out of the bathroom, Mike saw who it was.

Mike pretended he didn’t see Jackson. But when Jackson saw Mike, he smiled gleefully. Being mean to Mike was all the medicine he needed.

“Did baby get hurt on the playground?” Jackson said in some kind of creepy baby talk. “A little boo-boo?” He came closer, like he was going to give Mike a hug. Knowing Jackson, though, it would be more like a headlock.
