ONCE HOME, THEY LOGGED onto the laptop to verify the feed had been cut. Sure enough, every camera angle was black and inactive. Sofia removed the program from the hard drive, thankful they had already saved the segments of video showing Tatiana adding the various ingredients to the cauldron.

After video chatting with his family and updating them on the meeting with Tatiana, Heden discussed next steps with Sathan as Sofia sat beside him.

“Great job, bro,” Sathan said.

Heden appeared pleased by the praise, and Sofia realized Sathan was the only father figure he’d ever known. Although they were brothers, she could tell he looked up to the king and found it sweet that he basked in the acclaim.

“At this point, it’s probably best for you to head back to Astaria. You can focus on updating the military devices to communicate through the ether and also work with Sadie and Nolan to identify the toxins we found in Adelyn’s lunchbox. The chemicals are new to our realm, and we want to identify them so we can have a cure ready if someone accidentally ingests them.”

“I could write a program that could help the docs catalog and analyze the results faster. Those two love to write things on paper. It’s outdated as hell.”

“Agreed,” Sofia chimed in.

“You’re welcome to accompany Heden, Sofia,” Sathan said. “We could use another programmer with your skills. I don’t want to detract from your life in the human world, but if you’re willing to help us for a few weeks or months, I won’t turn it down.”

Sofia chewed her lip, contemplating. Was there anything tethering her to the human world? Not really. For years, there had been no purpose to her life except exacting revenge for Francesco. Sadly, no one would miss her if she left.

But there were other things to consider now that she was free of her quest for vengeance. She wanted to bear a child of her own and was pushing forty. There was only so much time left for her to conceive. Each moment she spent in the immortal world was one that lessened her chances of being a mother. After being alone for so long, she was ready to love and nurture a baby.

Glancing at Heden, she noticed his imploring smile. “Come on, Sof,” he said, nudging her shoulder with his. “Come back with me for a few weeks at least. I’m not ready to let you go yet.”

Sathan cleared his throat, acknowledging he understood their relationship was no longer purely platonic. “Why don’t you two discuss tonight? You have the house for one more night, right?”

“Yep,” Heden said. “Let me work on our girl here. I’ll do my very best to charm her into coming home with me.”

“I bet you will,” Sathan muttered, although it was good-natured. “Sounds good. Text me before you come back through the ether. Sofia, I hope you choose to come to the realm. We’re thankful to have you on our team.”

“Thank you, Sathan,” she said, swallowing over the lump that formed in her throat.
