Murphy Brown was a sitcom that aired on CBS from 1988 to 1998, for a total of 247 episodes. It was revived for a limited time in 2018. The program starred Candice Bergen as Murphy Brown, an investigative journalist and news anchor on a fictional news program. The 1991–92 season caused an uproar: Murphy became a single mother by choice, a huge step in the portrayal of women in popular culture. As a result, a curious incident happened, where fiction and reality blurred: Vice President Dan Quayle criticized Murphy’s character for “mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone.”16 Quayle’s remarks triggered a public discussion of family values. In the 1992–93 season premiere of Murphy Brown, the characters reacted to Quayle’s comments within the show itself. They produced a special episode that celebrated and brought public awareness to the diversity of the modern American family.
