AWARE—APY

1. Think of a relationship that failed. Consider how not being authentic, real, or honest contributed to its demise. What underlying beliefs do you have about yourself that support the patterns of your life?

2. Identify some of the abysses you have faced in your life. What opportunities did you also discover?

3. For this exercise you will need a large sheet of newsprint and a crayon or colored marker. You are going to draw a single unbroken line across the paper, as if tracing your life's journey. You will start from the left and move to the right side of the paper. In this exercise you are going to make a map of the resistances you have encountered along your way. Bring to mind some of the major challenges you remember facing. Your line will turn left or right, up or down, at each encounter of some obstacle. So in other words, your line will start out straight and then change direction in order to negotiate the particular life circumstance that showed up as resistance in your life. Your line will resume course across the page after you have either gone around the obstacle or somehow circumvented it. It's like tracing a line through a maze or labyrinth puzzle without the walls. You will mentally project the walls (resistances) onto your map. The finished drawing will probably look like a trek through a maze, with the exception that you are going from one side of the paper to the other.

4. Go back to your drawing and label each obstacle by identifying the situation and noting your feelings associated with the experience. What do you notice about your journey? Does the resistance you draw in your life have a theme? Has resistance in your life made you stronger and wiser?
