Drakon watched Katrin go. There was more there, more she wasn’t telling him. Why had she joined HUNT? What had convinced her they were telling the truth, that vampires were all monsters? She seemed so close to trusting him, so open. Then other times, so cold, so scared.

“She’s the one.” A voice came out of the shadowy cell at the end of the row. Nico stepped forward into the light. “She’s the weak link.”

“Don’t insult her,” Drakon snarled.

“You know I’m right," Nico said grimly. "She’s our way out of here. You saw how she responded when you took her blood. She’s almost in thrall to you already.”

Drakon bared his teeth in the darkness and snarled, low and dangerous. Nico stopped talking abruptly. Anger fizzed along Drakon's veins. How dare he talk about her like that? It wasn’t true. He hadn’t pushed at her mind; hadn’t taken anything she hadn’t offered freely. The thought of Katrin drugged and dazed by the bite, following him only because of his vampire magic, held no joy for him, if anything the picture Nico painted made Drakon sick.

Nico held his silence, but it took a long time for Drakon to calm enough to feel the eyes of the other vampires on him. Isaac and Victor. Good men. Good vampires. All trapped here by HUNT. Trapped just like Markus had been.

If they had a chance to escape, they had to take it. Nico was right. Katrin was their way out. But at what price? If he used her, tricked her, betrayed her, he’d be betraying his own soulmate.

Could he live with himself?
