Paula

Paula sank to the ground. She knew she was dead. Polar bears were fierce hunters and they were always hungry. Almost nothing could stop them. Remain calm, she thought, remain calm. What do I need to do first? Contact Jeremy. Give him my new location. Then get something to defend myself. She knew all she had was a small rifle in her pack.

Paula jumped up and ran over to her satellite phone. After switching it on, she called Jeremy.

“Mom, where are you?” asked Jeremy.

Paula breathed a sigh of relief. Just hearing Jeremy’s voice made her feel a bit better. “My new position is 60 north, 15 minutes, 35 seconds latitude and 96 west, 30 minutes, 20 seconds longitude.”

“Got it, Mom. We’re on our way. We should be there in about ten minutes.”

Ten minutes. Does that give me enough time? Paula looked across the water. The polar bear was about a half-mile away. “Jeremy,” she yelled, “There’s a polar bear!”

“Mom!” Jeremy called. Then the phone went dead.

Paula threw the phone onto the ground. She ran over and pulled her rifle out of her backpack. All I can do now is wait, she thought.
