Chapter 10

Surviving

The following day, the first thing I did was check and see if we were still invisible.

I turned toward Music Head and couldn’t see him: hopefully, we were still invisible and they hadn’t left me here alone. They’d never do that to me, so I was reassured. How were we going to complete twenty more hours? Additionally, we had to find the elixir.

We had survived so far but with great hardship, but I wasn’t sure we could keep on being lucky and clever for so many more hours. But we had to keep trying and believing.

What if we run out of luck? I thought and after a couple of hours, rolled out from underneath the bed and looked to see if Duke Lukas was still sleeping.

But he was gone.

“Wake up,” I whispered as I stooped and looked under the bed. “Wake up. We’re in Duke Lukas’s bedroom. We should have something to eat. I'm starving, and can’t remember when I last ate,” I said.

“What time is it?” Tom asked.

“8:58:23,” Music Head replied.

From the sound of their voices, I knew both had come out from underneath the bed.

“How are we going to communicate once we leave?” Tom said.

“What about holding each other’s arms? We don’t have to run or walk fast. We walk slowly and hold each other’s arms so as not to lose each other,” Tom suggested.

“That sounds good!” I replied. “I’ll lead, Tom can go in the middle and Music Head at the rear.” We held each other’s arms, and I led the way as we walked toward the door.

“I looked around Duke Lukas’s bedroom before leaving. A red, old Persian carpet was covering the floor. The rest of the furniture was as expected: old with a classic design.

Being perhaps the bravest of the three of us, I slowly opened the door and peeked out. Two divos walked outside the bedroom, laughing and making strange noises.

It felt good leaving Duke Lukas’s room. One by one, we emerged from the bedroom. We walked up the stairs, through the Mirror Hall. Finally, we got to the very dining room we had entered when we had first come to the castle.

Duke Lukas, Dr. Herbert, Danielle, Isabel and Betty were all sitting around the table.

Everyone but Betty sat eating breakfast. The divos were going in and out from the kitchen, bringing more food. I was really hungry, and was sure both Tom and Music Head were too. What a delicious breakfast the divos had prepared!

I had an idea: we could go to the kitchen and help ourselves to food because the night demons wouldn’t notice anything!

I pulled Tom’s arm in the direction of the kitchen, but he didn’t follow.

“We have to find the children. They have the emerald. We didn’t wait centuries for some children to arrive at the castle, find the emerald and keep it for themselves,” Isabel said.

I tried to pull Tom along once again, but it was impossible. He didn’t move.

Why is he not following me? I thought, turned around and looked in Tom’s direction.
