WHEN I left Milena’s, I was floating too much to head home and deal with Glenn’s boring ass. He thought that I’d be at work until that night anyway, so I had an alibi; I needed to use it.

I called Phil on his cell. He’d had a sexy demeanor about him when he’d dropped by Food Lion earlier that day, even though he shouldn’t have been there.

“Hello,” he answered.

“You got cash for a hotel?”

“Huh?”

“I’m not at work and Glenn’s at home so we can’t go there. You have any money so we can get a room?”

Phil cleared his throat. “Yes, I’m with Glenn now. We’re hunting deer.”

I was livid. “Deer-hunting season doesn’t start until the middle of September! You fools are going to get locked up!”

“Only if we get caught,” he whispered.

I could hear Glenn saying something in the background.

Shit!

“Make up an excuse and leave his ass out in the woods! I need some dick!”

“I can’t do that. Not right now.”

No, this motherfucker is not turning me down!

“Phil, meet me at the Days Inn in one hour or you’ll never even get a whiff of this pussy again!”

I disconnected the call and pulled up to one of the drive-up speakers at Whataburger. I had the munchies something terrible. When Diane—I recognized the heifer’s irritating voice—asked me what I wanted, I ordered a Whataburger Jr. with onions, tomato, and mayonnaise, an order of onion rings, and a large chocolate shake. That was a lot of heavy food to put on my stomach before a fuckfest, but weed had that effect on me.

Plus, I was an emotional eater. That shit that Milena had laid on me that day had me stressed. While Yosef seemed innocent enough, most maniacs probably did at first. That’s how they were able to walk the earth and kill people without being noticed. Usually, they were capable of blending right in.

But he’d been over there for two weeks and everyone knew he was there. Mrs. Clark had questioned me when she’d come through my line a few days earlier. I’d pretended like I was up on everything in regards to “Randolph” and assured her that Milena was happy. Mrs. Clark was concerned because Milena had been avoiding her parents, as she had been with me. Milena had never been a very good liar, and there was no way that she was going to be able to do it successfully time and time again. But he was still there, and it was only a matter of time before everyone figured out that his ass wasn’t returning to California.

Then there was that entire convoluted situation with Jacour. Milena really needed to let bygones be bygones and give the brother another chance. Instead, she was setting herself up to be in some love triangle and she wouldn’t be able to handle it. Shit, I could barely navigate mine. She was going to give up those drawers to Yosef if he kept staying there. Milena was far from a whore, and that was the problem.
