Southwest Asia

Southwest Asia (alternatively known as the Near East) is probably the earliest and arguably the most important of all the global centres of domestication. From the Neolithic farmers of this region, we have inherited cereal crops such as wheat (Triticum), barley (Hordeum) and rye (Secale), pulses including pea (Pisum) and lentil (Lens) and a range of domestic animals including cattle (Bos), sheep (Ovis), goat (Capra), pig (Sus) and dog (Canis). The increased economic productivity and new social organisation produced by this ‘Neolithic revolution’ at the beginning of the Holocene was associated with population increase and great developments in material culture.
