CHAPTER THIRTEEN
DECEMBER TWENTY-SECOND. The date stuck in Brodyâs head. He couldnât really do much about it. It just kept rattling around in there. And he had a bad feeling that he knew why. Because Benny was going to be gone, and one of the barriers between him and Elizabeth being together...
No. It wasnât a good idea. Even if they were going to have the supervision of a child to worry about.
But that day was today, and he didnât know what time Carter was coming to pick Benny up, only that it was happening.
At the staff meeting that morning, Gus gave Elizabeth a list of assignments, and in spite of his brain telling him not to, Brody ended up interjecting. âShe can have the day off, right? I mean, surely we can cover some things if we need to.â
âI donât need the day off,â she said.
She looked glassy-eyed though. And like she might need the day, so she could spend the time with Benny.
âItâs the last day before this crop of people goes home,â Gus said. âThen itâs Christmas break for everybody.â
âYes, and on Christmas break Benny isnât going to be here,â he said.
âBrody,â Elizabeth said, looking stern. âItâs fine. I can do my job. And I donât need you to interject.â
Shit. Heâd overstepped on this one. But he wanted to do something. He wanted to take that tired, worn look off her face and he wanted to smooth out all her concerns. He wanted to carry some of her burdens, dammit.
Except now heâd clearly made her angrier, and that wasnât his intent at all.
âI didnât realize,â Gus said.
âI donât need special treatment,â Elizabeth said fiercely.
âItâs not special treatment,â he insisted.
âIt definitely feels like it is,â she said.
âAll right,â Gus said. âIf youâre sure.â
âIâm sure.â She downed her coffee, and left the barn.
Benny wasnât in there. Brodyâd noticed Elizabeth had gotten a lot more comfortable with letting Benny play in the general area, rather than needing him to be around her at all times.
âAnd what was that?â Gus asked.
âNothing. I just know that she was upset about Benny leaving, so I wanted to say something. Because I knew she was never going to ask for herself.â
âAnd whatâs going on with you and her?â
âGood Lord, Gus, youâre like a nosy old lady now that you have a wife.â
âYeah. But, Iâm nosy for good reason. You donât just stick your oar in, Brody. Itâs not really your thing.â
This was the second time in just a couple of weeks that one of his brothers had tried to tell him how he was.
It wasnât less annoying coming from Gus than it was from Hunter.
Well. No, it was less annoying coming from Gus, because at least he was older.
Hunter was the baby. And he would always be the most annoying.
âNothing is going on. Sheâs my friend,â he said.
âSheâs your friend. Because you have so many of those?â
âI have some,â he said. âThough it may surprise you.â
âItâs not a bad surprise,â Gus said. âItâs just remarkable.â
âI guess.â
âYou seem to be a little bit different these last couple of weeks.
