Today Volkswirtschaftslehre (the economics of peoples) is the generic term for economics, but as is explained below it was sometimes in the nineteenth century used synonymously with Nationalökonomie, “the economy of the nation” or “national economics”, the two terms having German and Graeco-Latin roots, respectively.
