Demonstration Impacts

The Dashilar regeneration model demonstrated a multistakeholder, incremental, organic, and participatory approach in the regeneration of historic neighborhoods in China. The model innovatively addressed complex, multifaceted problems in historic neighborhoods in cities across China. Successful approaches incorporated by the model include the institutional arrangements; the phased approach; tailored infrastructure upgrading; detailed public-space design; market analyses and business entrance criteria; curation of BJDW in urban spaces; Dashilar pilot programs; voluntary relocation; private sector incentives; graded conservation and renovation; and community engagement.

Lessons learned from the Dashilar regeneration model have influenced similar projects in Beijing and across China. The model contributed to the latest program to upgrade public space in Beijing. Between 2015 and 2017, historic neighborhoods such as the Baita Temple, Shichahai, Tianqiao, Shijia Lane, and Shimo Chang joined Beijing BJDW one after another, learning lessons from the Dashilar model to regenerate decaying areas and build place-based brands. Other cities such as Shenzhen, Huangshan, Qingdao, and Tianjin have also begun to learn from Dashilar’s experience and are planning to pilot similar approaches to urban regeneration.

The impacts also include the strengthening of partnerships with communities and the private sector. Between 2011 and 2018, the Dashilar Platform has interacted with approximately 10,000 officials of government departments, urban planners, architects, designers, artists, academicians, NGOs, historians, business owners, media, and investment companies across more than 10 countries.
