Rob’s boots banged over the floorboards at the Palace Hotel and annoyed everyone trying to enjoy the Rufus Wainwright cover being performed by the folksy band onstage.

‘I have news,’ she declared, hopping onto a stool at the back table Aimee had snagged. She sipped the margarita that was awaiting her, looked up and saw Aimee’s face. ‘Ouch, what happened to your chin?’ Then she let out a gasp. Everyone turned to look. ‘Did Meredith hit you with her pre-owned Audi?’

It had been a few days since the almost-accident but the chin graze was still hanging around. Aimee covered it with a hand and shushed Rob. ‘Your news?’

‘Well, it’s not really my news. It’s just… the news.’ She unlocked her phone and pulled up a website. ‘I was cutting someone’s hair at the salon and I looked down and saw them reading the Daily Mail.’ She got distracted looking at the homepage. ‘Oh my god. They’ve got a story saying Shelley Craft is selling another house she’s renovated in town. Can we go to the inspection? I want you to take a photo of me in her bed.’ She crossed her arms, closed her eyes, and leant back in her chair as if she’d been put to rest in a crypt.

Aimee raised her eyebrows, waiting for her friend to get to the point. Rob exhumed herself and flicked her thumbs over the screen… then paused. She looked up and squinted at Aimee. ‘How many drinks have you had?’

‘One…’

Rob pushed her margarita across the table. ‘Here. Drink mine really fast before you read this.’

Aimee grabbed the phone out of her friend’s hand. The big splashy story at the top of the Daily Mail homepage was filled with a collage of photos and an unnecessarily long headline that screamed:

Controversial Byron Bay reality star SHOCKS in risqué bikini while HUMPING embattled footy champ on family beach as CHILDREN WATCH – and angry locals who called for the show to be CANCELLED are left FUMING… SEE THE PHOTOS! (Warning: Graphic)
