A few hours later I was walking out of the police precinct feeling as if I could kiss the damn ground as fresh air smacked me in my face. I hadn’t even been in jail that long, and for damn sure hadn’t seen the inside of an actual prison but that one night taught me a lesson that I would never forget.

My eyes landed on B who was posed up against his car, scrolling through his phone. He looked up and the moment our eyes met a slight chill ran through me at the intensity of his stare. Everything inside of me wanted to run into his arms, but the image of his lil raggedy ass whatever she was popped into my head and put a pause on all that. Clearing my throat, I jogged down the steps and made my way over to him, determined to play it cool.

“Hey,” I mumbled quietly, stopping in front of him.

Putting his phone away, he stared at me for a moment before pulling me into a hug.

Gasping lightly, I stood frozen for a moment before allowing myself to be pulled into his spell. Wrapping my arms around his waist, I inhaled his scent, a little taken aback at the feeling of comfort it brought me.

“Yo, you scared the fucking shit out of me,” Brehon murmured close to my ear, tightening his grip.

“I’m surprised you care,” I told him, pulling back from him.

“I don’t give a damn how much beef we got, I would never want some shit like this for you.”

I didn’t know how to respond to that, so I kept my mouth shut as he opened the passenger door for me, allowing me to slide inside before closing it and heading around to his own.

“How’d you get me out?” I questioned, buckling my seatbelt as he pulled off.

“All I’m gon say is it pays to have dirt on niggas that claim they’re supposed to uphold the law. Just cause you walking free doesn’t mean yo ass ain’t gotta show up in that courtroom on Monday though. As far as the judge knows you are still in a holding cell, so make sure you stay out of trouble and under the radar.”

“Trust me, you ain’t gotta worry about that,” I mumbled underneath my breath before digging into the next subject. “How’s Zi? What happened? How did…”

“Slow up Raqi, Zi is stable for now. He was drunk and some idiot let Zi race his car. He crashed into a wall and the car went up in flames.”

Hearing that made me sick to my stomach, and it was all I could do not to throw up in his car right then and there.

“Oh my God! I have to go see him! B you gotta—”

“Relax Raqi.”

“Relax!? Are you crazy? I can’t fucking relax! That’s my best friend and he’s laid up in a fucking hospital bed. Why would he ever drive drunk in the first place!?”

“Think about what day yesterday was Raquel.”

Sitting back in my seat, I racked my brain to try and come up with an explanation for Zi’s dumb ass decision.
