Chapter 7

Preventing Wrist Pain

No amount of pain was going to stop Ethan Kind from pursuing his passion. He was studying classical guitar at the Royal College of Music in London, and preparing for a career as a concert performer. The many hours of practicing every day were taking a toll on his body, but like many young people driven by a dream, he continued to work through the pain. Eventually he was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), but even that did not stop him.

“I ignored the pain and kept practicing,” Ethan says. “I just practiced harder and harder, until I crashed and burned in my third year.”

Ethan’s crippling injury forced him to leave the school and return to his home in the United States. “When I came back to the States, I went into therapy and never returned to pursuing a concert career,” he recounts.

Today Ethan is a teacher. He works with students and performers who are suffering from the same kind of pain that eventually ended his performance career, but now Ethan knows how to help them avoid burning out the way he did.

Before leaving the Royal College, Ethan was introduced to an educational process called the Alexander Technique, which aims to eliminate tension in the body by changing the way a person moves or holds a position. This technique is popular among musicians, stage actors, singers, and other performers. Ethan Kind, who is now a certified professional Alexander Technique instructor, has even applied the methodology to computer users.

In this chapter you’ll learn about the Alexander Technique, and how musicians like Ethan use it to prevent pain. The most common type of pain they are trying to avoid is found in the wrists, and it leads to the infamous carpal tunnel syndrome that Ethan suffered from. We’re going to look at what this condition does to your body, and how to prevent it through exercise and posture adjustments.

Let’s begin by getting some feedback on the current condition of your body.
