Chapter Twenty-Two

Tossing and turning, Pekin’s fitful sleep was interrupted by dreams of Scout holding her in his arms as they danced at the prom. In snatches and bits, his face swirled around her, interspersed with scenes of the dusty hallways and creaky stairs of Elmwood Manor.

She woke up depressed. It had almost seemed real, being with Scout. She sighed as she swung her legs off the bed and stretched. This wasn’t the way the first day of summer break should be starting out.

Having a naturally sunny disposition, by the time she’d brushed her teeth and showered, she was back to her normal cheerful self. Scout was one of her best friends. No matter what was bugging him, he’d be back.

She was nervous when she texted him and Amber about Monday. What if he didn’t respond? What was she supposed to do then?

Amber responded right away What time?

She texted back, ten?

Then she texted Scout?

She was starting to slip back into anxiety when her phone dinged with a text from Scout. Ten is fine. I’ll pick you guys up.

Pekin could breathe again. Whatever was bugging him, at least they’d be spending the day together on Monday and she’d pry the truth out of him.
