Paulâs body and companionship gave her the momentary release she needed. She passionately kissed him like sheâd been longing to kiss a man. She felt the eagerness of that first time of touching someone new, someone forbidden. The windows were open and the curtains fluttered, allowing in slivers of light that shivered across their bodies. And his mouth also shivered across her neck and his hands on her thighs. It was the kind of sex she needed.
Paul was gorgeous and gentle, and because of that she was able to let herself go and fuck her pain away even in this spare hotel room that wasnât used because of water damage. The room was hot too, un-air-conditioned and smelling of cigarette ash and cleaning supplies. Still, when it ended, she was sad for it to be over, and she kissed him gently before saying goodbye.
Frances returned to a quiet house with no dishes or cooking because the sitter had done that while there. Her body was alight with a calm she hadnât enjoyed in a very long time. As she lay in bed, her false sense of serenity ended, and the deepest shame burned between her breasts and spread like fire between her legs. What was she looking for? The emptiness was even deeper than her shame. It was a shaft full of toxic air in which no canary could survive.
Then she heard a croaking giggle from the corner of the room. It couldnât be one of the children. She had checked on them before getting into bed. They would have made a commotion as they came into her room.
Maybe it was a demon ready to take her to hell. She believed she deserved it. Her life meant nothing. As long as the demon didnât touch a hair on any of her childrenâs heads, she would let it take her. Frances lay on her back, watching the ceiling fan turn in circles. The fan was a closed circuit of movement. It couldnât stop on its own. Eventually she fell asleep and forgot her pain again.
In the boredom of the next day, her thoughts drifted back to sex and its adrenaline rush. As much as she enjoyed Paul, she didnât want to make any specific someone a habit. An affair couldnât be that bad as long as it wasnât love, she told herself. After all, at the end of the day David always came home to her, even if their eyes never met.
And so Frances found what she needed to cope, in sexual encounters with men she would see a couple of times before ending the affairs without any remorse. The ritual of preparation gave her the rush of excitement and expectation. And then there was the pleasure she would feel with no other sounds but their wet skin slapping and their moans of gratification.
This continued for years until darkness began to creep in again inside of her. The emptiness was there again, crying to be fed something, anything. To be pacified from people and things outside of herself.
