CHAPTER TWENTY

Jagger

I lost track of time talking to the guys. E is like a dog with a bone right now, wading through all the shit Judge Jones had his hands in. I tried to help him but ended up getting in the way. I’m convinced the man is part machine.

When I walk back into the house, I’m surprised to find Slade and Astrid asleep on the sofa. I thought for sure napping was going to turn into fucking.

I stand there for a minute and just watch them. Astrid is tucked against Slade’s chest, and the man himself has his arms wrapped around her like he’s worried she might slip away. They look so peaceful that I leave them and head to the kitchen to make something for dinner, deciding on pasta with a spicy tomato sauce and a salad.

I chop the onion and the chili peppers, my eyes drifting to Slade and Astrid often, a weird feeling running through me. I’m not saying I’m jealous because I don’t hold any animosity toward either of them, but there is a part of me that feels left out.

Jesus, fuck. I sound like a baby.

Shaking it off, I go back to cooking, making an extra special effort to ignore them until I hear Astrid stirring. She gently pulls herself free from Slade’s arms before leaning down and pressing a kiss against his forehead. The move surprises me. Slade had been a dick to her when she first arrived. I’m glad she managed to put that aside and offer him affection, something he doesn’t get from anyone except Salem.

“Hey, are you hungry?” I ask her quietly when she gets closer.

Instead of answering, she walks around the counter and straight into my arms, pressing her face against my chest.

“What’s wrong?”

“Slade told me what happened to him.”

“Wait, he talked to you about it?”

She looks up at me and frowns. “Yeah. Why? Is he not supposed to?”

“No, it’s not that. It’s just that Slade is pretty private. He doesn’t usually share with anyone.”

“I think he was trying to explain why he reacted the way he did today in town.”

I don’t say anything for a minute, stunned that he opened up at all. I’m one of the few people who knows what happened because I’ve been there from the beginning.

“He told me how he was framed and sent to prison. He didn’t get around to the part where he was exonerated, though.”

“Honestly, the whole thing was a shit show. Here. Sit while I stir.”

She sits on the stool closest to me as I toss the chopped ingredients into the pan and lower the heat.

“Slade always claimed that he was innocent, and I never doubted him for a second. I know him better than he knows himself, and he’s just not capable of something like that.”

“I didn’t think for a second he was. But how did it get so far? Isn’t the husband the first person the police look at?”

“To the outside world, they had the perfect marriage.”

“But surely the truth would have come out during the trial?”

I scoff.
