Chapter 14

Michael left for London the next day, met with the estate agent and closed the deal on buying his own house from Hannes. He smiled ruefully as he wrote the check. Hannes had always been a wily old rascal. He was now paying him for a house he had given him six years earlier.

Inside, very little had changed. Michael knew that was partly because of Molly’s sight, but when he entered the living room and saw the piano still there, he instantly pictured her sitting at it, a skinny, lost looking thirteen-year-old whose long hair fell forward to hide her face as she played her heart out.

Michael wandered upstairs, and swallowed painfully as he glanced into her room. He closed his eyes and inhaled. Yes, a trace of her delicate scent still lingered. Michael smiled as he remembered the first time she’d entered this room, how she’d dug her toes into the rug and her hands had fluttered along the bedspread. It’s like a fairytale. He could almost hear her voice again, see the joy in her face. Now if only this fairytale could end happily.

Michael discovered another advantage returning to London. For the first time in years—he felt home and grounded. Living in the states, he’d felt rootless and restless. This was where he belonged, not just in this house, but in this city. This was his life.

He hadn’t contacted any of his fellow Guardians, but he refused to worry about the reluctance holding him back. Right now, his focus was Molly in hope she would return what he felt for her. Michael’s hand shook slightly as the alternative reared its head. He wouldn’t think about that now. Now was for her—for getting Molly to remember, so they could find a way to move forward. He had to stay in control. He felt the small, square box in his pocket, the ring inside it served as a reminder the goal was no less than forever.

The two weeks until her arrival crawled by. He spent time becoming familiar with the area around the school. Several small cafes and pubs lined the streets nearby, along with a small music store Michael thought might appeal to her. Ridgley did not have the most advanced security system, so determining her schedule and where she would be staying was fairly easy. He thought of the others who had stalked her as a teen. Better security would be helpful, but since there had been no more brushes with vampires besides the Guardians, Michael wasn’t overly concerned. They had eliminated that threat.

However, he felt just a bit like one of those stalkers that seemed to be the latest craze among sick human past times, though he supposed vampires wouldn’t be exempt from such things.

In order to establish his presence in the neighborhood prior to Molly’s arrival, Michael began to frequent one of the cafés for coffee and croissants in the morning, although most of the coffee ended up in a potted plant, and the croissant he normally fed to the birds hopping about on the sidewalk.
