Chapter 12

The Guardians were like caged lions waiting for the hunt. While Michel, Michael, and Gabriel worked to get the takeover plans rolling, Mikhail and Michaly were back to their marathon chess games. Mick had purchased a Wii and, with his usual ironic humor, a game called Vampire Slayer. Anna would have expected Miguel to be in the thick of that, but instead surprised him with his nose stuck in Don Quixote. She placed her hand on his forehead.

“Hello, Anna,” he said quietly. “I am quite all right. You do not need to check me for a fever.”

She flopped on the couch next to him. “This seems an unusually quiet pursuit for you.”

He laid the book to one side. “I am in an introspective and melancholy mood.”

“You have helped me before. Anything I can help with?”

He looked at her with his liquid brown eyes and Anna suddenly saw what the problem was. His feelings were there for her to see, plain and stark.

“Oh, Miguel.”

“Don’t,” he muttered. “I don’t want your sympathy.”

Anna looked around at everyone else, still otherwise engaged and then at her hands.

“I love Gabriel,” she said softly. “I can’t return your feelings.”

“What I suffer is an infatuation,” he said quietly. “It will pass because I know it must.”

Anna nodded and turned her face away. She didn’t know what to say to him.

Miguel took her hand in his. “Please don’t let this come between us. I want you to always feel free to come to me if you need help of any kind. I would never pressure you.”

“Thank you.”

She had stood. She had promised to check Molly who was complaining of a feeling of fullness that made Anna suspect the baby had dropped and was moving into the birth canal. At the sound of a scream and several thumps, everyone suddenly froze in place. Anna was the first one out of the living room, nearly running full tilt into Michael who flashed past her.

“Molly!” His voice was hoarse and panicked.

As he bent toward her crumpled form at the base of the stairs, Anna ordered, “Don’t move her yet. Let me look at her.” She brushed past him, vaguely aware of everyone standing in place. Kneeling next to her, Anna asked quietly, “Molly, can you hear me?”

“Oh, Anna, I feel so stupid.”

“Lie still for a moment. Do you have any numbness or tingling anywhere?”

“No. I bumped my bum and the back of my head, but that’s not the real problem.”

Anna stroked the dark hair from her pale, sweaty face. “You are having labor pains?”

“Yes. And I was coming to tell you. I got in a hurry and slipped.”

“Let me check your head and feel along your ribs before we move you anywhere. There is still plenty of time before your son makes an appearance.”

As Anna shifted Molly’s head forward, Michael knelt on her other side. “You’re sure it’s labor, Molly?”

“Yes. It started this morning, but I thought it was those false contractions.”

“Braxton-Hicks.” Anna supplied.

“But they’ve been really regular and growing stronger.
