Individual place with cosy traditional interior, carefully prepared food and lovely garden

Plenty of chatty customers create a cheerful, relaxed atmosphere in this charming little pub. The cosy flagstoned bar has a huge log fire, comfortable homely sofas and armchairs near the entrance, whisky-water jugs hanging from oak beams, and lots of pictures and decorative plates on the walls. A games room at the far end has darts, dominoes, cribbage, table skittles and board games. The ever-changing beers are kept in top condition and might include Butcombe Bitter, Gloucester Gold, Harveys Best and Woodfordes Wherry on handpump; also Weston’s Old Rosie cider and a short but decent wine list. Look out for the interesting newspaper-influenced décor in the outside gents’. The handsome gargoyled stone exterior is nicely weathered and very pretty in summer when the hanging baskets are at their best. There are seats on a tranquil terrace among plant-filled, painted tractor tyres and recycled art, and they’ve recorded over 200 species of moth and 20 different butterflies. This is a picturesque village and enjoyable walks nearby include the Knightley Way. It’s worth ringing ahead to check the opening and food times.

Served at weekend lunchtimes only, popular food includes sandwiches, filled yorkshire puddings, cassoulets, stews, and puddings such as gingerbread pudding and meringues. Benchmark main dish: meat/fish/mixed platters £13.00.
