By the time lunch rolled around, Maggie had negotiated two settlements and cleared four client files from the growing pile on her desk. A knock at the door broke her focus on an email from her contact at the IRS. “Mags? I’ve got a food delivery for you.” Terry peered inside, a paper bag with tweed handles in her hand.

“Oh, Terry, I got one for you, too. Feel free to take the package from the top.”

“Ooh, what is it?” She opened the bag wide and produced two identical take-out cartons made of biodegradable material, along with compostable forks, knives and napkins. Terry set one at the edge of Maggie’s desk.

“It’s our favorite mixed green salad with sockeye salmon and extra avocado from that little lunch spot in the building next door. I’ve been eating everything but the right thing lately, so I thought I’d do something healthy but still yummy.” Maggie grabbed her salad and fork and began to mix the contents after winking at Terry. Three of Cat’s Greek salads could fit in this container.

“Thank you—this is just right. Want me to close your door?” She held up her carton in thanks.

“Yes, please,” Maggie called, already back in her email.

The door clicked closed, and nothing but the sound of Maggie crunching on lettuce and cucumbers filled the room until Joan burst into the group Zoom. “Hey, girrrl,” she called loudly.

The Zoom window had been covered by Maggie’s email browser, so she jumped at Joan’s screeching, almost dropping salmon in her lap. “Ma’am, what is the matter with you?”

She cackled as Savvy and Beth both logged on.

“Whew, if looks could kill, Mags... What’s going on?” Savvy asked.

Maggie pointed at Joan, as if everyone could see who she was referring to. “She plays too much.”

“Oh, hush,” Joan retorted. “Come on and spill the beans.”

Maggie stabbed at her salad, still a little peeved. She shrugged. “What? We had a good time.”

“Don’t do that, Mags. You scheduled this little squad call so that we could hear all about your li’l date, so drop some details or I’m going back to my wellness research,” Savvy threatened.

“Okay, fine.” Maggie rolled her eyes, shoving a big bite of salad into her mouth.

Beth’s mouth dropped open at the sight, and Joan turned off her video to hide her laughter, though she neglected to mute her microphone. Savvy shook her head as if she’d seen it all before.

“First of all, his house is on the Strand. Remember when we used to walk down there by the beach? One of the houses that we pointed to saying that we wished we had a house like that, with its perfect view of the water for every sunset? Yeah, he owns one of those. And instead of burning dinner or frying me up a bologna sandwich, he hired a chef to cook us authentic Mediterranean cuisine. He’s like a Ken doll, but Black.”

Savvy snorted but then nodded in agreement. “Right down to the dream house. Good-looking guy, great job, good money. He ticks a lot of boxes so far.
