CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Georgia sat in the car and watched the lines in the road get swallowed by the big SUV as Marcus drove. He remained silent, not speaking to her, and that suited her.

She wanted to turn her head and look at him but needed all of her energy to pull herself together. If she looked at him now, she wouldn’t be able to control the urge to crawl next to him and seep up his warmth.

Until he’d stopped on the road, she’d been lost beneath her wolf, unable to shift back, not because she couldn’t shift, but because she didn’t want to. She shivered as she remembered the moment when her wolf had stretched past the boundaries Georgia had maintained all her life. It had pushed her mind down and soared to its full size.

That initial sensation of drowning had terrified her. She’d thought her wolf was trying to dominate her. But just as quickly as she was pushed under, she was pulled back up, surfacing in her full wolf form, but it felt different. Instead of feeling as if a separate person shared her brain, Georgia felt completely connected to her wolf. For the first time ever, they’’d shared one consciousness. Even now, it felt different. She could feel her wolf in her mind, but the constant tug of opposition was gone.

Was this how other shifters connected with their beasts?

Her body tingled with the need to do it again—to let her powers stretch her skin tight. And strangely, the need came without the usual fear of staying hidden. She felt raw and excited all at once. Her senses had never felt this heightened before, not even while in heat. It made her both desperate to get home and sad to leave the one thing keeping her on edge.

Marcus.

His scent surrounded her—fresh and spicy. Her ears picked up the soft thud of his heart beat and the soft scratch of his shirt across his skin as he handled the wheel.

Squirming in her seat, she bit her lower lip and tried to control her breathing. They’d be home soon, and she would have time to figure out how to handle her reaction then.

She was distracted from her thoughts when Marcus slowed the car as they approached the front gates of the compound. The iron frames slid open and a flash of relief spread through her, but the feeling disappeared quickly when Marcus drove past her cottage.

“What are you doing?” she asked, panic making her voice come out in a squeak.

She made the mistake of looking at him and jerked her head back on moan.

Looking at Marcus in her state didn’t help.

He didn’t answer. He didn’t have to. On some level, she’d known he wouldn’t just walk away after what happened. Marcus wasn’t the type of man to leave a damsel in distress.

She bit back a giggle at the term.

Distress.

Exhilaration, confusion…arousal—those words better described the sensations rolling through her.

Her heart began to race as they approached his home. Her breath hitched and her nipples tightened.
