Gregory M. Wilson - Director

As the director of the film Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door, my primary responsibility was to bring truth and clarity to a deeply emotional and intricate narrative, with the subject of child abuse being the central theme. I also understood that many of the book’s staunchest supporters would be deeply apprehensive of a less than honest translation of both the book and the script. I also had to address the inherent obstacles and challenges of directing minors whose real life physical and emotional experiences were limited with respect to the subject matter. In addition, certain legal issues with regard to producing and directing the project could not be circum- vented. Understanding this, I made changes to the script to artistically, poetically and legally deliver the most authentic adaptation of the written material, with the knowledge that no film can truly capture the innermost details of a book. At times this fact placed me at odds with the screenwriters but not with the author, Jack Ket- chum; and although filmmaking is a collaborative art form, I cannot direct by committee.

I invite the viewer to be both critical and understanding of all the variables that encompass a film with such deep sensitivities of which I go into detail in my director’s commentary.
