Magnus may not need to eat or drink, but I needed to, and my cupboards were scarce. My fridge was hardly any improvement. Before I left, I cleared out a space in my bedroom closet for Magnus.
âIs this absolutely necessary?â he asked.
âIt is if you donât want my sister to discover you,â I said. âI have no doubt she will be around again before long trying to peek through windows. We canât risk it.â
He sighed as he settled into the bottom of the closet. âVery well.â
âAnd protect this with your life,â I said as I handed him Mormorâs spell book.
He took the book using both arms and awkwardly placed it on his lap. Staring down at it, reverent, he caressed the cover.
âItâs hard to believe that such a powerful spell has been stored in such a simple looking book,â he said. âA spell that could give new life to a soul over a thousand years later.â
A tinge of pain developed in my chest. Magnus had spent endless days in purgatory. Thrud probably hadnât meant to snare him with her song, but he also hadnât meant to become enchanted. Thorâs punishment was over the top. Lokiâs intervention with Freyaâs plan was just plain mean.
Had Magnus been in human form now, his glistening blond hair would have tumbled forward a little. I could imagine sweeping it back and taking his chiseled jaw in my hands as I kissed him, deep and hard.
Need welled up in me, and I took a step back to take control over my impulses.
âIâll be back soon,â I promised, unable to say anything else.
He turned his gaze up to me, and somehow, his eyes smoldered. âBe safe. You are beyond precious to me.â
I blinked, stunned. How could he say such deep words with conviction, just sitting there in the bottom of my closet, holding the spell book in his lap?
Above all else, he meant them.
I flushed a little. If I really was the one who could break his curse, then my well-being was of the utmost importance to him.
What an odd feeling, being the key to someoneâs future like that. Being the key to their entire existence.
Without thinking, I closed the space between us and pressed a kiss to his cheek. The scent and taste of gingerbread filled my head, and arousal developed between my legs. The gingerbread aroma had become like a manâs cologne, enticing and suggesting possibilities.
Magnus ran one arm down my side and rested it on my hip as he stared up at me. Desire flared to life in his gingerbread face. He was a man with needs, and I was a woman on the brink of fulfilling every one of them.
I shook away the thought. He wasnât the man in my dream; he was a cookie, for godâs sake.
At the store, I grabbed everything I needed, as well as a package of cookies I could actually eat without it becoming a lifelong commitment, before making the drive home. When I pulled into the driveway, a sinking sensation filled my stomach, forming a strange weight.
