CHAPTER 13

ONCE EVERYONE GOT over their relief that Jennie and I were okay, and we got the all clear from the ranch medic, who said we were physically fine aside from scabbed knees and hands, Jonas, Ms. Kim, and Marcus joined forces to plot our punishment. Jennie and I were banned from pretty much everywhere on the ranch except the barn, the library, the dining hall, and probably the bathroom. And we were not allowed to hang out together.

I guess they thought our combined power was too destructive for Rancho Espanto to handle.

Or they figured it was easier to keep an eye on us with me in the barn and Jennie at the library.

But we still had a mystery to solve.

Jennie and I figured out the perfect way to communicate, even with us so far apart. We tape notes to each other on the back of the book drop box outside of the library. I drop off mine in the morning when I’m on my way to the dining hall to stuff my mouth full of unspicy green chili scrambled eggs (all as the Gearhart brothers look at me and scowl). I pick up Jennie’s reply when I’m coming back from dinner in the dining hall, after I wolf down the Gearhart brothers’ chili burritos.

Rafa, I read this story about a family that thought their house was being haunted but it turned out someone was just living in their attic. Do you think the green sweater man could be someone like that? Also, jjajangmyeon is better than that picadillo you were telling me about.

Jennie, Beto and I once read a story about a ghost that could concentrate all his anger and rage so that he could actually touch things. Maybe Bartlett Arnoldson is doing that? And I do not tolerate slander of any kind against picadillo. Especially if someone says you’re supposed to add chorizo to it. That’s just ridiculous.

Rafa, I think we should set a trap for the ghost. Do you have any idea how to trap a ghost? A pit with poles sharpened into spears? A cupcake under a box? A trail of shrimp crackers? No, wait, that would be how someone could catch me. Don’t tell anyone. I can’t let that information get out.

Jennie, it would be a trail of merenguitos for me. I still can’t figure out why Bartlett Arnoldson would nearly kill us and then tell everyone where we were so that they could save us. Do ghosts have multiple personalities? Why is he trying to get me kicked off the ranch one day and then saving me the next? He’s the most annoying ghost I’ve ever met. Not that I’ve met a ton of ghosts.
