SKEPTIC'S CORNER

Psychic Content in Dreams

Given the surreal and disjointed nature of typical dreams, it is easy to discount our nightly visions as nothing more than meaningless fancies conjured by an exhausted mind. However, there is ample evidence that there is more to dreams than meets the eye. Chemist Friedrich Kekule famously discovered the structure of the benzene molecule in a dream, and Elias Howe, inventor of the sewing machine, had the vision of how to structure the needles come to him in a dream. In addition to problem-solving dreams where a sudden inspiration is transmitted through dream imagery, early psychologists noted another widespread phenomena in dreams: dream telepathy. Psychoanalysts working in the early half of the twentieth century noticed what they termed "psychic leakage" between analyst and client, with very private information about the analyst often manifesting inexplicably in patients' dreams. Although some analysts insisted that these details must have been unconsciously transmitted through body language or other ordinary cues during the course of a session, psychic leakage was one of the phenomena that led Dr. Sigmund Freud to assert that proof of the paranormal would most likely be obtained first through a study of human dreams.
