HOME AND HEART

THE EARLY MORNING WAKE-UP CALL JOLTED THE BROKER OUT of a most pleasant dream about highly successful IPOs and soaring stock values. He fumbled for the light on his nightstand and switched it on. He glanced at his watch and realized that if he wanted to do some crunches to work on his abs before his shower, he’d have to get a move on. The Executive had promised to show up at the hotel no later than 7:00 A.M.

He had just finished tying his shoelaces when the phone rang a second time. It was the Executive. “I’m downstairs, ” he announced cheerfully.

“You must get up awfully early,” the Broker mumbled.

“I do. I’ve hardly missed a sunrise yet. Must have something to do with being raised on a farm.”

The Broker rode the elevator to the lobby and spotted the Executive on the far side. He appeared to be holding two paper bags. Upon closer inspection, he discovered they were bags from a fast-food restaurant.

The Executive held up the bags. “I brought breakfast.”

“Are we eating in the car?”

“You got it, Sport.”

The Broker chomped on the egg-and-ham-something-or-other as they headed out on the highway.

The Executive continued, “I figured you’d be hungry, and there isn’t a good restaurant between here and my ranch. I thought we’d spend a nice relaxing day there.”

“I thought you were just driving me to the airport. I’m going home today,” the Broker protested.

“You can’t. You’d miss my Sunday school class tomorrow. You’ll learn a lot from it. You really have to be there.”

“Well…” the Broker hesitated. Then he thought more about the offer. “Okay, I’ll stay if it’s that important to you.”

“It is. I’m going to introduce you to the most significant person in my life—my wife. She’s a real treat!”
