Given all of this, I reject the common understanding of cancer as primarily determined by toxin-initiated genetic mutations. The pathway from environmental chemicals to genes to genetic mutations to cancer-cell growth to diagnosable cancer is appealing in its simplicity, but insufficient and far too narrowly focused. Moreover, it blatantly ignores the possibility of individuals themselves being able to control cancer. By ignoring nutrition’s role in the promotion of cancer, a role that has been demonstrated in both observational human studies and experimental animal studies, we ignore our best chance at preventing the disease and disregard all personal agency. This negligence is obviously abhorrent when it comes to human health, but it does rather conveniently allow us to continue enjoying foods containing that dear “high quality” driver nutrient, animal protein.
