We’re also told that disruption of wildlife will be minimized. It’s important to note here, the idea of “minimizing” something, as anyone who ever tried to compress a first-generation PDF knows, only means making it smaller than the largest it can be. It doesn’t mean making it as small as it needs to be. We can’t inform birds, bees, and food chain insects that they need to stick to their channels.

There will be consequences. Policy makers and designers will also get together to develop strategies to assure us that more drones will mean fewer cars, playing on our cognitive shortcuts to tell us this is a good idea, but without pointing out that fewer cars will mean more drones in the sky above our cities and neighborhoods. All this is an example of how designers use HCD pain points and rationales to justify their pet projects. They force future users to see the good as outweighing the bad. Does this really make your life better?

WHAT HAPPENS TO

DESIGN WHEN WE

IGNORE EVERYTHING

EXCEPT THE HUMAN

ELEMENT?

A STOOL DOESN’T

NEED THREE LEGS

BECAUSE OF

HUMAN-CENTERED

DESIGN.
