Why Does it Matter? People Need a Context

You have your reasons for making a particular request, but if you do not say what they are, the person you ask to do the work will hear only a task, not an opportunity. People do better work when they understand the importance of a request, or see that it relates to a particular initiative, goal, or objective. If we do not add any context, all we leave them with is “Do this and hurry up about it,” which is not a strong foundation for a performance agreement.

When you help people see that their work matters, and that what they are doing contributes to larger goals, they are more attentive to producing whatever you need to help reach your goals. Just as giving a deadline lets people know there is some urgency to your request, telling them why your request matters gives them a framework for understanding and adjusting priorities.
