Chapter 13

I can’t leave.

I thought to myself as I laid in bed, staring at my ceiling. Last night changed things. Letting King Niles and King Viktor feed from me was one thing, but when King Niels confided in me about his hand, I reconsidered. I was getting close to The Four, and I finally realized that I could see myself ruling here at court. Being married to either King Viktor or King Niles. I could improve the lives of the humans and change how the blood here was used. I didn’t need to run. I needed to stay and improve Vampira.

Staying was best for my kingdom. It was cowardly of me to think I could escape. It was unprincesslike for me to want to escape. I had a duty to fulfill. And now that I was getting closer to The Four, I could picture myself living here for eternity. Their customs, while barbaric at times, benefited both humans and vampires. I admired them. The Blood Feast showed me how safe the humans felt with the vampires, while also showing how the vampires needed the humans to survive. It only made sense to live in harmony with one another.

Maybe I could even relay this message to my father and he could allow vampires in the kingdom of Zayn. It would be a big change, but given more time, I believed I could change both kingdoms for the better.

Thinking of last night sent a flurry of butterflies through my stomach. King Niles confiding in me made my heart soar, but thinking of King Viktor feeding off another made the pit from yesterday return. I was jealous. I had no clue which King I preferred. Both were vastly different, and both made me feel differently.

King Viktor made me feel comfortable. Plus, he loved the humans. It made me feel good knowing that he was on good terms with the human village and I admired that about him.

King Niles made me feel seen and heard. It made me feel powerful to know that he cared about my opinion. I admired his strength and his willingness to trust me with his secret.

I grabbed the suitcase, that I had packed and hidden under my bed, out from its hiding spot. I opened up the zipper and took out the three maps. As I opened up the map of the castle, to see where I should explore today, my bedroom door was burst open.

King Niles entered the room. He froze at the sight in front of him.

I must have looked guilty standing in front of a packed suitcase with a map in my hand.

“What are you doing?” King Niles asked as his hands flexed. I saw that in his right hand he was holding a bouquet of roses.

“It’s not what it looks like,” I urged. “I was unpacking.”

“All your things were unpacked for you when you arrived.”

“I know but…”

Before I could finish, King Niles tossed the bouquet to the ground and exited my room.

“Wait,” I shouted after him.
