“Wait!” exclaimed Question Woman. “So, you and I are walepú? After all, aren’t we both crows and humans?”

“Sister, yes, we are both crows and humans, but that doesn’t mean we are walepú. Besides, if we were walepú, we wouldn’t say so, not while others are listening. We just haven’t forgotten the stories.”

“But I do forget the stories, and so do you,” said Question Woman. “I have to ask you a question so you can remember a story to tell me.”

Answer Woman chuckled.

“Why are you laughing at me?”

“I’m laughing at both of us,” answered Answer Woman. “That’s our story, yours and mine. We need each other. Which is what every story from this wondrous mountain teaches. And what the Forgetters have forgotten.”

“Oh, I forgot, we’re telling Forgetter Stories, aren’t we?” said Question Woman.

“So, ask a question.”

“I can’t think of one. What should I do?”

“Look around. See the outcropping of rocks on that round hill just below us. See the curve of the hill against the blue sky. Whatever you see can make you ask a question.”

“Actually, I’m not looking at the hill. I see Copeland Creek making its way to the Cotati plain. I don’t have a question, but Copeland Creek reminds me of the story of the pretty woman and the necklace.”

“Yes, the pretty woman didn’t think she was worthy of a man.”

“It was a love story,” remembered Question Woman.

“Yes,” answered Answer Woman. “I guess I don’t have to tell you that one again.”

“Aren’t we talking about the Forgetters? Tell a love story about them.”

“I already have one in mind.”

“So, tell it.”

“I will if you give me a chance. You’re so impatient.”

“What is it?”

“Take a breath and I’ll tell you the story of a woman who invents a lover.”

“I’m listening.”
