CHAPTER NINETEEN

Speechless, Sydney watched Morgan walk past Den to the refrigerator to unload the bags.

Guilty much? She swallowed, pulling at the bottom of her shirt. “We weren’t gone that long, Den.”

“Can we talk for a minute?” Den asked. “I was waiting for you.”

Still unable to look him in the eye, she lowered her head. “What about?”

“Alone?” She peered up at Den then. His attention was on Morgan.

“Okay,” she said, sensing a shift in the atmosphere. “We can talk. But I don’t want to get into anything serious here. It’s supposed to be a party. Morgan, can you…?”

“I’ll be in the other room,” Morgan grumbled.

Once they were alone, Den approached her. “Syd, I miss you. I’m so sorry about everything that’s happened between us. I need you to forgive me.”

Syd closed her eyes. “This is not the time to talk about us. But just so you know, I’ve already forgiven you.”

His eyes widened. “If you’ve forgiven me, why can’t we give this another shot? We can make this work, Sydney. I love you.”

She held up her hand when he inched closer to her. “No you don’t. You don’t love me. If you did, then you wouldn’t have cheated on me. The fact that you did tells me a lot about our relationship, though. As much as what happened hurt me, I know it was for the best.” He opened his mouth to speak, but she had to get this out. “Let me finish,” she rushed out. “Den, I know you’re sorry. I’m sorry, too—for so many things.” Needing space, she walked around to the other side of the island. “I wanted things to work out between us so badly that I refused to see what was right in front of me. I should have never accepted your proposal.”

“I do love you,” he insisted.

“And I love you. But I can’t be with you.”

He frowned, confusion etched in his face. “Are you serious?”

She gripped the countertop, digging her nails into the granite. “Yes, I am.”

“So, you love me, but you can’t be with me. When did you come to this conclusion?”

“You fucked another woman in our bed,” she said. She’d tried to be rational, calm. But it still stung. “You don’t think before you act and I’m tired of being the casualty of your mistakes. I deserve better. You promised me you wouldn’t hurt me again.”

Being with Den, loving him, was like a battle she couldn’t win. The more she fought, the more she hurt. Just when she thought they were moving forward, he’d pull them back. When she tried to walk away, he begged her to stay. And she always let him back in. It was time for one of them to let go.

“I didn’t want to hurt you, Syd,” he said, his voice thick. “Please don’t give up on us.”

“Give up?” she asked. Unbelievable. After everything he’d done, he had the nerve to tell her not to give up on them. Anger built up in her like steam in a pressure cooker.
