The whirlwind of parties and entertainment that was the Season went into full swing, and Henrietta found herself dragged along into them.
The Duchess’s prediction came true, and a rather flattering drawing of herself, Cordy and Beatrix appeared in the London papers titled The Three Graces, which more than made up for the more vulgar cartoon, The Three Witches, that Cordy at least found incredibly amusing.
Regardless of any impact that the pictures had on the opinion of the Ton, it could not be denied that Henrietta’s new style had catapulted her into a new role as a dashing heiress worthy of the Beau Monde’s adoration. Flowers arrive daily, as did invitations to a wide range of events and entertainments.
Although as an heiress and granddaughter to the Marquess of Shropshire she had never wanted for requests for attendance at all the major balls and parties, she suddenly found herself facing five or six options for entertainment each and every evening.
"My word, if I'd known all it took to make you popular was to add a little colour to your wardrobe, I'd have binned those insipid white muslins myself!" Grandpapa had said, laughing at his own joke.
“You wouldn’t if you knew the cost of them,” Henrietta shot back, which only made him laugh more.
"Hush the pair of you, we have far more important matters at hand,” said Grandmama as she sifted through the pile of invitations.
“My dear Lady Shropshire, I think you will find there is nothing more important than the cost of a Lady’s wardrobe,” said Grandpapa in a perfect imitation of his wife’s personal maid.
Henrietta giggled, but her Grandmama chose not to respond, even if her mouth tugged a little way into a smile.
"There's an invitation to dinner with Lady Delby and her girls - I do know how much you like her niece Beatrix, although I find Lady Cordelia a touch too vivacious for my tastes. Here's an invitation from the Seftons to attend a card party, and another from the Sheridans for a Venetian Breakfast. You've a choice of three gentlemen to convey you to the Opera, although I cannot think why when our own box is vastly superior, or of course there is the Fitzburgh ball which will no doubt be enjoyable, despite the fact I am quite certain that Lady Fitzburgh waters the champagne."
Henrietta couldn’t help the grin spreading across her face. Being dashing was proving to be much more entertaining than she’d hoped. "Could we start with the Sheridan’s Venetian Breakfast, visit the Opera with whoever is the most interesting company, and then finish up by attending the latter half of the Sefton’s card party?”
The Marchioness looked up, her face the picture of surprise. "I know you are enjoying being the toast of the Season, my love, but isn’t that a little excessive?"
“I thought dropping in for but half an hour was the fashionable thing to do?”
“If you are Prinny or Brummell I suppose, but it wouldn’t be good to have a reputation as flighty.”
Henrietta lay back into her chair, throwing one arm across her eyes as she attempted to look dramatic.
