Practical Experience With Alcoholics

Beginning with the visit from Ebby Thacher, Bill Wilson began to see the benefits of working with other recovering alcoholics. Willingness to listen to, take direction from, and share honestly with another person who understands your situation seems practical and obvious. However, it turned out to be especially profound in the context of addiction recovery. Bill Wilson, Bob Smith, and others saw the positive impact of mutual support many times in their work with alcoholics. Examples of working with others in the AA context include group meetings, one-on-one sponsorships, and open talks.

Wilson used the Oxford Group meetings as the focal point for alcoholism recovery in the early stages of developing AA, but he eventually broke away from the Oxford Group. Wilson found that certain aspects of the Oxford Group sessions were not effective for alcoholism recovery. Specifically, the Oxford Group members’ names were not kept anonymous, their practices were too “absolute,” and the group operated on the basis of promotion rather than attraction.
