Annja was already at the planning table as the team leaders came in to take their seats. She did not greet the others as she usually did, but stared at her folded hands as if lost in thought.

It was past 0300. D’Shay fought to stay awake.

“D’Shay?” said Annja, “Are you with us?”

He blinked his eyes open. “Oh, yeah. Sorry. Um, no

disrespect, Miss Annja, but I think we’ve all got the plan memorized.”

Annja leaned back and crossed her arms. “Then you do the final run-through, D’Shay.”

“Sure.” He rubbed his face and leaned forward. “’Gade chatter says their main column is going to attack us from two fronts—those arrowed lines you have on the battle map. One will consist of ATV attack vehicles. They’re gonna send a smaller group toward—”

“Miss Annja,” came Xian’s voice from the doorway. His face was anxious.

Annja stepped out to talk with him. When she returned her eyes were wide, her face pale.

“I have … terrible news,” she said. She glanced at Reya. “I am sorry to report that Xian just received a distress transmission from Post-2.”

Reya put her hands to her face and whispered, “Bettina.”

“I’m afraid the post has been lost,” Annja said. “The last message was cut short, but said they intended to fight to the end. They expected no mercy from the ’gades.” She looked at Reya. “Bettina was a selfless warrior. We will remember her as we prepare to engage these killers.”

Reya swiped away tears and nodded.

Damn, thought D’Shay. It just wasn’t right. Reya had been through more than any of them, and now she loses her best friend.

Annja cleared her throat. “We must go forward and be sure that does not happen here.” She looked around the table. “Are teams fully prepared? Giambo, you first, please.”

Giambo nodded. “Each of us know what to do. Jay-em gonna be number two in command. DuShay, number three. If I be killed or wounded, they command.”

D’Shay sensed a prickle of fear. If ’gades could take out Giambo and Jaym, they’d probably take out the entire team. Including himself.

“Good,” Annja said, “but I want Xian to join you to send us communications. I have to know if our plan needs revising—if something goes amiss.” She looked to Maykego. “And the archers?”

“My archers be forty in all. Reya and five others from our people, plus all the Ezondwei archers. My team gonna meet villagers tomorrow. We will explain battle plan to them. We gonna be outnumbered by ’gades, but I think we make a strong stand.”

“Reya?” asked Annja. “Are you positive you are able to be second-in-command?”

“I’m up to this, Annja. The arm brace makes all the difference.” She lifted her chin. “And I will fight to the end, like Bettina.”

Annja nodded. “God willing, that will not be necessary. And let us hope no second-in-command will need to take over in any team.” She looked at Nakhoza. “You and I will be in charge of defense here. For those ’gades who might make it this far, we will be prepared.
