Chapter Twelve

~<>~

IN THE MIDST of performing a routine maintenance check at the fire station, testing apparatus and equipment, Gard looked up when he heard the door open and slam shut. “Hey, Nevan. What are you doing here?”

“Taking care of my pals at the fire station,” he said. Nevan hefted the large package he carried under one arm, while raising a smaller container with his other hand. That snagged not only Gard’s attention, but brought the other four guys on call to the front of the station.

“Figured you guys might enjoy one of my Irish pork pies with baked garlic potato wedges on the side.”

“A whole pie?” Gard salivated as he held out his hands to take the package. “Now that’s what I call real hospitality! What did you bring for the other guys?”

Jeff, another firefighter elbowed Gard out of the way, taking the container from Nevan. “Yeah, right, like we’re going to let Nevan’s brother take charge of the pie. I don’t think so.” The men, including Gard, shared a laugh, well aware of his reputation for glomming down inordinate amounts of Nevan’s pork pie in one sitting.

Gard took the smaller bag, holding it high and studying it. “I don’t imagine this is Guinness.” He grinned, knowing Nevan wouldn’t be delivering anything alcoholic when they were on duty.

“It’s a couple thermoses of my famous Irish coffee.” He looked from one man to another with a waggish grin as he watched their reactions. “Minus the Irish, of course.”

Gard and the other firefighters thanked Nevan, who told them it was the least he could do, since they were giving up their holiday to protect the people of Glassfloat Bay.

“It’s already cut into big slabs,” Nevan said of the pork pie. “Mustard and mayo are in those small cups. The larger one has garlic dip for the potatoes. I remembered that you have plates and silverware here at the station so I didn’t bring any.”

“You just saved us from chowing down on another one of Jeff’s bean surprises.” Gard elbowed Steven as they enjoyed a mutual snicker.

“You’ll be missing out on my special Christmas edition of bean surprise but I guess I can save it for the next time we’re on call together.”

“Yay,” one of the other men said without enthusiasm.

“What makes the dish Christmas?” Nevan asked.

“It’s all red and green. Cherry tomatoes and kidney beans for the red, and bell peppers and broccoli for the green.” Jeff shrugged as the rest of them sneered. “Okay, okay...I’d rather have the pork pie too.” He laughed and they all helped themselves to the dinner Nevan provided.

“Got a minute?” Nevan asked Gard as they sat off to the side, away from the others. “I’ve got something to tell you.”

“Yeah, sure. Everything okay?”

“With me, yeah, fine.” Nevan gave an indifferent wave. “This is about Sabrina’s husband.”

“Hanklen?” Gard felt himself tense up at the subject. “What happened? Did he make trouble for you at the pub?”

“No,” Nevan shook his head, “nothing like that. I had to cut him off today and he wasn’t happy about it.
