The Secret of Simplifying

Any woman with a lick of fashion sense knows that the secret of style is found in three little words: accessorize, accessorize, accessorize.

Men have it easy when it comes to accessories. All they have to worry about is a tie, a watch, a belt, and maybe a briefcase. Their shoes don’t really count as accessories because they’re almost always the same color and height.

But women? We have to deal with earrings, watches, bracelets, rings, necklaces, belts, broaches, scarves, glasses, stockings, socks, hair ties, headbands, handbags, briefcases, and shoes of every style, height, and color. Being properly accessorized is anything but cheap. Or easy.

First, it’s a matter of finding suitable storage space. Now I’ve observed individuals who appear to be wearing every accessory they own, but we usually need lots of space to store all the accessories not currently in use. And that just screams for some type of time-consuming, fancy organizational system because, as they say, if you can’t find it, why have it? Or as I used to say, if you can’t find it, replace it.

However, in an amazing fit of sensibility several years ago when I discovered the loss of yet another earring, I made a rash decision. I would own one all-purpose, lovely pair of earrings. I would wear them all the time. Period. Why not? I wear the same ring day after day, year after year and have not yet been arrested for taking unacceptable fashion risks.

At the time, I didn’t realize what a brilliant decision this was. This small change simplified my life immeasurably. I’ve saved all kinds of time not having to decide which earrings to wear. And even more time not having to locate two that make a reasonable match. Because I always knew the exact location of my one pair of earrings, I hung on to that single pair for many years. Eventually, one earring broke, which required a replacement. Then I received a pair as a gift, so I have two pairs now, but nothing like the amount of earwear I once managed.

Ironically, this idea, born out of a desire to stop spending so much money on earrings, has produced an even more desirable fringe benefit. Simplifying, even in the tiniest ways, makes my life more enjoyable. Simplifying helps reverse the process of being overpowered, overextended, overworked, and overcome by the pressures of life—pressures that are mostly self-imposed. Simplifying, even when done in a tiny way, has the ability to refresh the soul. You won’t believe all the extra time and freedom you’ll enjoy when you simplify, to say nothing of the positive effect on your bank account.

Living simply doesn’t mean moving back to the land, ditching your favorite appliances, and slaughtering your own meat—unless of course that’s your idea of simplicity. Simplifying means getting by with less while maintaining comfort, eliminating complexity whenever possible, and minimizing the time demands that have a way of devouring us.

Here are three examples of ways to simplify that won’t impact your life negatively:

Stop buying clothes that need to be dry-cleaned.
