CHAPTER 19

“It’s an exact copy of the previous Template,” Gerhard whispered, hand outstretched with a flash drive as he rolled past me in the entry way of Mendelium Tower. “One where Tourette’s syndrome still exists. You have twenty minutes. Go.”

I connected with his cold green eyes. No more thinking, no more planning, no more games. Time to shut up and let my actions speak. I squeezed the drive into my palm and nodded. He continued toward the Template production room, as CEO he got the honors of announcing the production of the Template serum.

I bolted to the elevator, slinging my laptop in a side bag, my shoe falls echoing through the empty back hallways. My pass unlocked each and every door. Past storage closets and back offices I navigated to the service elevator. Just minutes ago, I’d felt lethargic. Gerhard brought about an entirely different side of me. His grit and perseverance were intoxicating, if he wanted something in life, he did it. Maybe I could do the same.

Nineteen minutes.

The elevator doors closed, and I began my rattling ascent towards the roof. I gripped onto the bar and closed my eyes, hoping with my every thought that the elevator wouldn’t break down. A single issue or hang up and our plan would fail. Would that even be so bad? I was about to break into one of the most interconnected computers in the world. My entire life could collapse around me if the next few minutes went wrong. What terrified me, even more than being caught, was messing up. For a couple hours the backup server would be connected to millions of Template users around the planet. There was no room for mistakes. The elevator rumbled to a halt.

Sixteen minutes.

I scanned my card to open the door. Again, my new position coming in handy. There were no questions when the board director of security wishes to examine the backup servers. The doors opened revealing a room that looked like a miniature version of the server room downstairs. It’s minuscule twin, one-hundred stories above.

Fortunately, there were less for security measures than the basement. There was a state-of-the-art door locking system, but no security guard posted up here. Normally there might be more people using the elevator, but the announcement of Template production always drew a large crowd. Gerhard insisted that as much of the company as possible attend, it was his idea to use it as a cover.

There were video cameras on the entrance and strategically pointing at the server. It was challenging to hide from other humans—but I had a way with machines—I would have to cover up my steps carefully. I couldn’t waste any time.

I searched around the small area, with barely enough space for me to move around the singular humming machine. The claustrophobic room had concrete walls. Probably a good thing, being this high up would only have served to disorient me. Nearly two thousand feet above the city, the only thing overhead was the rod that emitted the Template signal.
