CHAPTER 12

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. (Revelation 13:16-17)

IT WAS JUST AFTER SEVEN a.m. and Tom Carson was about to head out the door when Peter came bounding down the steps, a look of panic on his face. In his hand was his iPad.

“Dad, I think you better have a look at this,” said Peter, handing the device to his dad.

Tom scowled as he read the rather long message from someone by the name of Monty Steiger. “Is this a friend of yours?”

“We met at the ISEF back when I was a senior in high school,” reminded Peter, who seemed indeed agitated. “We’ve stayed in touch ever since.”

“Yeah, but is he reliable?” asked Tom. “I mean, we didn’t see this coming; we’re not ready.”

“Yes, I believe he’s reliable,” replied Peter. “He told me that he was going in there a few days ago. I strongly advised him not to go, but it looks like he went ahead anyway.” Peter hesitated. “Dad, whether we like it or not, this is it. We can’t let this go down. It’s hard to say just how many people will be exterminated.”

“Nearly two million,” said Tom, handing the iPad back to his son. There was a look of astonishment on the younger man’s face. It was not encouraging. “Yeah, we knew they were going to do it eventually, but not this soon.” Tom paused to get his breath. “OK, I need you to forward this e-mail to my office computer. I’ll call the colonel and set up an emergency meeting. Peter, how many of the new rings are actually up and running? You know better than me.”

“Eight,” said Peter, “maybe nine by tomorrow.”

“It’s not enough,” complained Tom. “Damn. Well, get that e-mail forwarded to me and meet me in my office as soon as you can. We have a full day ahead of us.”

A full day was right; it was nonstop. The Project Bluebird committee met from nine a.m. till late in the day in the conference room. They tossed back and forth one idea after another. The original plan would have to be scrapped. The troops were still in training and they only had half of the rings that they had hoped to have in place. They had planned to extract the prisoners from the ghettos followed by a military strike on key military installations within Europe and Asia, which would lead to a full-scale invasion by the combined forces of China, Israel, Australia, Canada, and the United States. At best it was a risky plan.

“The military brass in China indicate that they are not even close to being ready,” noted Colonel Douglas. He turned to the recently promoted Captain Harris. “How many ghettos are we looking at liberating?”

“Twenty-seven, sir,” noted the captain.
