The hour grew late, and Terrence worried that Jessica would not come after all. He could only stall so long after the Superintendent and Lydia left, but figured he could place a call to Dr. Nigglesby to see how Blandthorpeâs heart and Millicentâs mind ranked against the general populace. He was just dialing the number when the door to his officeâstill sans the glass panelâslammed open with a bang.
Terrence was proud of himself for not jumping, but he cancelled his pride when he felt the beads of sweat jumping to his brow at the sight of a livid Danbeere storming up to his desk.
âI donât know what youâre playing at, Inspector.â Danbeere wielded a large envelope as if it were a sword. âBut you keep Miss Hadley-Merrill out of it. Solve your case and leave her alone!â
âIâ¦erâ¦â
âAnd donât try to play it smooth with me. I know youâre more interested in investigating my fiancé than doing anything productive.â
âYour fiancé?â Terrence regained his composure. âShe finally accepted you, then?â
âWhy, youâ!â Danbeere sputtered and threw the envelope in Terrenceâs face. âJust do your job, or Iâll have you knocked back downstairs, patrolling the parks for litterbugs!â He stomped out of the room, slamming the door violently behind him.
Terrence was still trying to decide how to react when the door creaked and fell inward, tearing the hinges from the frame.
âI am going to take that man down,â growled Terrence through clenched teeth.
