“Here,” Lock said as he saw me perched on the bed, struggling with the ankle straps of my stilettos. He dropped to one knee in front of me, then pulled my foot up onto his thigh. “Let me.”

Lock’s fingers brushed across my ankle, then eased the strap out of its buckle. He made it look simple. Probably, it was.

But now that we were out of Avarice and back up in the room, the exhaustion in my body had multiplied straight into infinity. My brain was still firing at a mile a minute, but my body felt sluggish and slow.

I was physically tired and mentally wired. A dangerous combination.

“Thank you,” I mumbled down to him as he slipped my foot out of the heel. He pressed his thumb into my arch, massaging a tension I’d been too wiped to even realize I had. “That…oh.” I closed my heavy eyelids and nodded. “That feels really…really nice.”

“Ye deserve a bit of nice, I reckon.” He gave my right foot a final squeeze, then moved to the left to give it the same treatment. “Ye did well tonight, Joanie. But if yer feelin’ tired—”

“Like an old, worn-out knock-knock joke,” I confirmed. “I wish I could sleep, but I don’t think my brain’s ready to settle down yet.”

“Aye, Avarice will do that to ye.” He pulled my foot up to his lips and placed a firm kiss to my inner ankle. “It’s meant to drain ye, really. Playin’ the slots is all right as long as yer not too keen on winnin’, but the tables—where the real gambling happens—those will suck ye in easy if ye let them. Drain ye dry, too.”

“And I wasn’t even gambling.” I sighed as he lowered my foot to the floor and rose once more. “You must feel even more spent than I do.”

“Ach, I’m all right.” He turned to give me a wink, then moved to the phone on the nightstand next to the bed. “I’ve got the stamina of a fallen angel and the stubbornness of a demon. Makes it easier to manage. But you—” He sat down on the bed and picked up the phone. “—are gloriously, brilliantly human. And ye haven’t eaten dinner yet, either. Gonna order somethin’ up from Indulgence. Fancy a bite?”

My eyes wandered to his lips as he spoke.

A bite sounded nice right now—though, a slightly different kind than what he was offering.

“I’d love a bite,” I admitted. Maybe getting some food in me would help wind my brain down. “Do they do cheeseburgers?”

Lock laughed. “They’re a Michelin-star restaurant in Hell, Joanie. They do everything.”

I went to the bathroom to remove my makeup while Lock ordered us a late dinner. It was strange, having so much makeup on. Tonight I’d worn my lipstick and eyeliner like war paint. I’d needed it, too.

But I felt most like myself when my face was bare. I probably looked prettier beneath the magic of foundation and mascara. That wasn’t really me, though.

It was one of the many nice things about Lock.
