MAARTEN
Adrika knocks on the door of the flat for a second time.
âThis definitely the right one?â Maarten says, looking down the corridor.
âShould be.â She knocks again.
A click sounds behind the door and it pulls open a crack. âYeah?â
âWeâre looking for Jaz Braxton. Police.â Adrikaâs words disappear through the gap of air between them.
âPolice?â The door opens further. A man stands before them in tracksuit bottoms and hair standing up on end. âExcuse the state of me. I was in bed. I work shifts. Iâm a paramedic.â
âIâm sorry to have disturbed you. We have this as Jaz Braxtonâs address. Is he at home?â
The man shakes his head, yawning. âNo. Havenât seen him. But then he knows to be quiet when Iâm asleep. Wouldnât he be at work?â
âThe cathedral is closed today.â
âOh, shit, yeah. The fall. I spoke to the crew who brought him in.â
âDo you know where he might be, if heâs not at home?â Adrika is polite.
âErm⦠Have you tried his uncleâs? Oh, and he had a date last week â but I donât know her details. He might be with her? Sorry. Iâm shattered.â He yawns again. âI havenât seen him much in the last few days. He was out last night. At that party.â
âAnd when you have spoken to him, would you say heâs seemed like himself?â Maarten asks. âNothing unusual?â
âWell, you know his grandadâs just died? Heâs been upset. Obviously. Poor bloke. He was round here the morning he died. Canât believe it. I see it a lot with work, but you never get used to it. Here one minute, gone the next.â
âJoel Braxton was here?â
âYeah.â He yawns again. âYeah, he came round. I was getting ready for work. They had a cup of tea. Had a bit of a row about something â a lot of swearing. He was gone by the time I was dressed.â He shakes his head. âNot the last words youâd want to say to your grandad. If youâd known. Hindsight and all that.â
âDo you know what their argument was about?â Adrika asks, as Maartenâs mind spins.
âNah. Something and nothing probably. But there was shouting. Look, I really need to head back to bed for a bit. I can give you Jazâs number? You probably want to speak to him.â
Outside, Adrika shakes her head. âStill no answer.â She lowers her phone.
Maarten looks up at the sky, blue with sun falling through the clouds like fingers. He had thought when he was young it was the kind of light that collected souls. Took them up to heaven. He has no idea what he thinks now.
âSo, Joel Braxton visited Jaz. Thatâs the first weâve heard of it. I wonder if his dad knows? Or Michael Braxton.â
Adrika taps the back of her phone with two fingers. âDoesnât sound like it.â
âYes,â he says. âAnd Jaz has been missing all morning.â
âWhatâs our next move?â
