Chapter 12 - Wystana

Wystana sat in front of the fire, her arms wrapped around herself. They hadn’t made it back to the main road that evening after all, though Talatheon had assured her they would early tomorrow morning. She felt something flutter through her at the thought of him. She wasn’t sure what it was. Panic, maybe. Embarrassment? Anxiety? Excitement? She quickly shoved the last option from her mind, instead focusing on the flames dancing in front of her.

She still couldn’t believe what had happened earlier had actually happened. It had all occurred so quickly. She’d gotten to the top, realizing that Talatheon wasn’t behind her just yet. The prospect of seizing the opportunity to run crossed her mind, and then she heard a crash and a yell. The next thing she knew, Talatheon was landing on top of her as she tried to pull him up from the cliff. And then his lips were against hers, and it felt like electricity was racing down her spine. As quickly as it had all happened, it was over. She shoved Talatheon off, something he seemed all too happy with as he scrambled back himself. They stared at each other, and she tried to think of something to say. Before she could, though, he was getting to his feet and muttering a short thank you for her saving him. And then they were off.

The rest of the trip had been silent. Not the kind of natural silence that sometimes came with traveling, or even the unsure silence where neither could think of another conversation topic. This silence was painfully awkward. It was occasionally punctuated by one of them saying something. Commenting on the weather, or the path in front of them. And then the conversation would die as soon as it had begun, and Wystana would catch Talatheon looking back at her. She couldn’t believe he’d kissed her. They hated each other. And after what had happened in their youth, that was the last thing she thought he would ever do. Her mind was already trying to rationalize it away. Minimize some poorly thought out choice based on the shock of nearly falling. Wystana dared a slow look up from the fire, and over to Talatheon.

She thought she had convinced herself that it had meant nothing, that there was no point in bringing it up. And then she heard herself speaking.

“You kissed me,” she said. He looked up at her. For a moment, she thought he wasn’t going to answer. Then he sighed.

“That was a mistake,” he replied. That stung, though she tried her best not to show it.

“Yeah, it was,” she agreed, watching his face for any sign of emotion. She found none. She continued. “It doesn’t matter. I’m over it. I’ve been over it for years.”

He gave her a quizzical look. “It just happened—”

“Not the kiss,” she said, rolling her eyes. “What happened.”

The two words fell heavily into the night.

“Oh,” he said.

Wystana looked back to the fire. “I wish we could have still been friends, though.
