Chapter 13

He cackled when I staggered, my wall falling away in shock. He shoved Iris aside, stepping forward to lash out with his whips as I tried to get my bearings. I deflected the blow, but only barely, my mind too rattled to return the attack. Iris was bleeding steadily from her arm and wrists, but she scrambled out of the way of any future blows. “You’re lying.”

“Fox was my brother, you see. We weren’t close, thank goodness. He was a huge disappointment to our family. He didn’t want to join the Dark Fae. He believed the lies, the pretty little story the Ancients tell. He didn’t work against us, however, not until he met your mother.” He spat the last word at me, and rage worked its way through my body, my power pushing through my skin in waves. “I’m surprised I didn’t realize it before. You do resemble her. Granted, unlike my brother, I never made it a habit to take notice of the witches.” I pushed my magic harder, attempting to lash out with the kyanite, yet each of my strikes seemed to hit a wall. I wanted to scream my fury. I forced myself to breathe, to assess what I had. The ruby and onyx called to me, the black and red side by side against my arm, sparkling in the light. If my physical strikes couldn’t get through whatever insane barrier he had erected, maybe mental strikes could. I pushed my magic into the stones, letting the ruby amplify what I had before drawing on the onyx. If I couldn’t break his body, I was damn well going to break his mind.

“My mother would have told me if she loved a Dark Fae. He was a good man. She mourned him every day,” I spat at him. I wouldn’t let him destroy the name of a man I never even got the chance to know.

“Oh, you high and mighty types,” Birch hissed. “Do you know how much blood was on his hands? On your precious mates’? And yet you think they’re so much better than we are simply because it’s Elves blood rather than witches? Hypocrite.” He danced closer to me, fire lashing from his whips and searing my skin where it struck. I shrieked in pain, doubling my efforts. Somehow, he seemed to be immune to my crystals, and I had to do something fast. “I see you’ve noticed my little upgrade. A gift from the queen, you see. She’s spent years finding ways to keep the witches from her. Your crystals won’t do a thing against me. Only Fae and Elves can pass my barrier. And you’re too weak to control Fae magic,” he taunted. A quick glance showed me that Onyx was bleeding heavily, even as he took down yet another opponent, and Reed was actually in the pond now, drowning his foes as they approached. Terran had the earth around him torn to pieces as he threw chunk after chunk of rock at Fae and Elf alike.
