The Invasion of the Divers (Kalima, 2016)

Tupac, or perhaps 2Pac, far from home, is laying down a rap about his condition. The young Luba man from distant Kasai rarely stops moving, using his whole body to tell the story of his forced evacuation from the diamond mine near his home in Mbuji-Mayi, where the diamonds were “all white, 100 percent. Not 80 percent!,” and his long, circuitous journey here to Sakima’s mining concession in Kalima. His hands and arms rapidly perform rowing, diving, digging, running, flying, being stopped, and even fighting as he becomes, in turn, a speedboat, a motorcycle, machine guns, a car. Tupac explains how the governor of Kasai “gave a contract” to “the Chinese,” or some Chinese contractors who wanted to mine diamonds semi-industrially, and then he brought in Congolese soldiers to chase out the artisanal diamond miners. Tupac clearly misses the high-stakes world of diamond mining:
