Chapter 25

Jay

* * *

His father returned as calm as usual after his trips, but Jay noticed a brooding dark in his eyes. Had it always been there?

To Jay’s excitement, his father had agreed to two hours a week for Jay’s art class and had assigned him to create a detailed timeline and analysis of developments in art education since 1821. Jay had no doubt the continuation of his classes rode on how well his father received his assignment, and his classes allowed him to pass notes to Rob in the form of a supply list that set the times for their meetings.

As he worked on his art education timeline one afternoon, the stiffness in his bent neck grew into a pain at the base of his skull. Groaning, he raised his head and stared out of the window over the top of the roll-top desk where he sat. He hadn’t planned on a study session that day, but rain had put a stop to his class that afternoon. He stood and twisted at the waist. He was at the point of recording the contributions of Charles A. Cummings to the art program at the University of Iowa and estimated only a few more hours of work.

The thought of studying by lamplight sent a throb of pain through his head, but if he concentrated, he might be done by nightfall.

He performed a few more twists and bent side to side a few times. His gaze caught on a pile of reports and his father’s ledger stacked on a corner of the desk. He’d seen it when he’d sat down, of course, but in an upright position the writing on a sheet of paper protruding from under the cover came into view, and he didn’t miss Thomas’s name.

He straightened and stood still for a moment, listening to the quiet. With his father and the boys in the school room, the only other person in the house was Madeline. The kitchen wasn’t far, but whatever task she was occupying herself with at the moment was a quiet one.

He took a breath and glanced at the door behind him. It wasn’t shut but cracked to less than an inch. The floor beyond creaked with every footstep. Where did Thomas go? That was all he wanted to know. He removed the ledger from the top of the reports, set it in front of him, and opened it.

Harold Bros. Fine Furniture and Décor. In Argentina?

A thrill of excitement for Thomas ran through him. Thomas was too lively for a staid bank or accountancy position here. A foreign country. Jay thought again of Paris. Where had the other boys gone? There were several letters under the top one. He lifted off the one to Thomas’s parents and frowned. William had gone more than six months ago, his departure as sudden as Thomas’s. In fact… Jay hadn’t known about any of them leaving in advance but had assumed his father had not considered it necessary for him to know.
