Resign (carefully)
The final step in any escape is the fateful moment of resignation. Once you've made the decision to leave you then have to decide when to resign. Ideally you'll hand in your notice when you can answer “yes” to all of the questions on your checklist. You may decide to leave when you hit the target in your Escape Fund.
It is often hard to take the final step. Not that we would advise following his example but Rob resigned because his annual review came around and he had decided not to spend the previous three weeks doing the necessary work of collecting feedback from all his managers. Rather than handing over a dossier of references in the meeting with his director he handed in his notice. He had essentially forced himself into a decision by not preparing for the annual review.
Most of the resignations we've heard about have taken place without incident. The worrying about it is often way worse than the reality. Be prepared to defend your decision if challenged and if you're happy with your plan don't be talked out of it. You will be surprised how positively many bosses react.
A word of caution: obviously you want to maintain a professional reputation and behave just like you'd expect an employee of yours to behave. What's more, you never know whether your colleagues and bosses could become future clients, useful contacts or even whether you might need to ask them for a job again one day! Don't burn any bridges.
Just after resigning and just before asking for a reference Rob made the mistake of sending an email to his director with some feedback explaining some of the reasons he and other people at his level were considering leaving. Big mistake. No reply, no reference!
Gareth Jenkins, a trainee accountant who was sacked from his Big 4 Accountancy job for failing his exams, far outdid Rob's well intended email with a cynical rant about corporate jargon that went viral and made it into the UK press. Needless to say, even though we doubt he wants a “City” job in future, he probably could have done without the notoriety that his email sparked. Read Gareth's email here: http://bit.ly/WkhFSE.
But if anybody else wants to come with me, this moment will be the ground floor of something real and fun and inspiring and true in this godforsaken business and we will do it together! Who's coming with me besides … ‘Flipper’ here?
